Summary

This grant mechanism supports nonprofit and community-groups’ work throughout New York City, aiming to strengthen parks, open spaces, and public green infrastructure. The funding is intended for projects that improve environmental stewardship, health and wellness, arts and culture, youth development, community activation, and urban resilience. It seeks to lift up under-resourced neighborhoods by supporting efforts to care for publicly accessible open spaces, promote equitable programming, and build capacity among local organizations.

Eligible applicants are nonprofit organizations or community groups operating in all five boroughs of New York City. Some programs allow groups without formal nonprofit status if they use fiscal sponsorship. Applicants typically must have experience working in parks, playgrounds, community gardens, waterfronts, public plazas, or other open spaces. Projects should demonstrate meaningful connection to communities and address public-space needs. Government agencies are not eligible to apply as lead applicants, though they may partner.

The grants come in different tracks. One track provides smaller support from about $1,000 up to $40,000 per year for one- or two-year efforts, especially for groups with smaller operating budgets under approximately $175,000. Another track offers larger grants in the range of $25,000 to $100,000 or more annually for more established organizations or collaborations, for systemic, policy, or organizational projects that require deeper resources.

Benefits of these grants include financial backing for program delivery, capacity building such as staffing, marketing, outreach, or equipment, as well as environmental action, youth engagement, and arts or cultural components. Grantees also gain exposure, potential partnerships, and opportunities to shape long-term improvements in how parks and public open spaces serve their neighborhoods. The geographic focus is strictly New York City, and priority is often given to communities facing environmental injustice or lacking resources.

Organizations and individuals based in New York City who are engaged in Arts, Culture, History & Humanities may be eligible to apply for this funding opportunity.
